Abstract: Costituisce lo storico del primo impianto del geodatabase della tipologia della superficie forestale che ricopre il territorio regionale (all'epoca per oltre 255 mila ettari, circa un terzo del totale).I criteri per la definizione dei tipi, e quindi anche per le unità di rango inferiore (sottotipi e varianti), si basano su fattori ecologici, geografici ed antropici che condizionano la loro composizione attuale e la loro evoluzione. I principali fattori differenziali sono: la composizione, il distretto fitogeografico, il substrato o il gruppo di suoli; la fascia altitudinale; il fattore termico; la zonalità; il dinamismo; l'influenza antropica.Le unità base di riferimento sono le categorie (n.20), i tipi e sottotipi (n.105) e le varianti (n.70). Il supporto teorico e scientifico si basa ed integra i testi “La vegetazione forestale e la selvicoltura nella regione Friuli- Venezia Giulia” a cura di R. Del Favero & Altri. Udine, 1998 - Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia- Direzione regionale delle foreste - Servizio della Selvicoltura.La banca dati dei Tipi forestali del Friuli Venezia Giulia è stata realizzata a cura dei tecnici forestali dott.for. Giuseppe Vanone (area montana) e dott.for. Gianfranco Dreossi (fascia collinare, submontana e Carso) fra il 1997 e il 1999 nell’ambito del progetto regionale finanziato dall’Unione Europea per la creazione di un Osservatorio e una Borsa del Legno regionali.
